Humpbacks in the Harbour!

16.7.2017 Whale watching

9:00

This Sunday morning we headed out on the bay of Faxaflói, course set to northwest towards the feeding ground. As we entered the shallow part of the bay we saw a gathering of birds. In the middle of a frequent strong spout was sighted. We got closer and all of a sudden a humpback whale breached. It appeared repeatedly around the ship, showed its fluke and came fairly close. We got good exposure and another breach from it before it went on feeding and we left it to go about its business. Further northwest we came across a fast moving pod of white beaked dolphins. We managed to stay with they until they dived towards southwest.

Lilja sailed out of Reykjavik's Old Harbour for a whale watching express tour in the Icelandic waters of Faxafloi bay. We headed west in the westerly swells and found a Humpback Whale. The Humpback whale was lunge feeding and we saw the inside of its mouth. It swam underneath the boat and came very close many times. The whale slapped its tail as well. We also saw its fluke when it dove several times. Hundreds of birds were diving and catching fish: Northern Gannets, Northern Fulmars, Puffins, Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Parasite Jaegers. Some passengers were coming back since they had been on an unlucky tour previously. We were glad to have them back and show them the whales. It doesn't get any better than this.

On this afternoon tour the wind had increased, it remained from northwest and the wave movement had also increased. Visibility was good and the sun shined for the duration of this wildlife excursion. When we entered the feeding ground we came to a location where a couple of minke whales had been sighted. We searched that location well but with no further signs of movement we continued. Our search was directed towards northwest were a strong spout was sighted. It came from a humpback whale that came up to the surface fairly close to our ship. It dived but reappeared a little later further east and we managed to get a good look at it before it dived again. We eventually set the course to south and arrived safely back to the Old harbour in Reykjavík.
